How do you take classic pop and jazz standards and make them fresh again? Since 2006, Scats on The Sly has done it the old fashioned way with precision, personality and a lot of love for the string swing style of music they play.
The three members of this energetic trio (Mike Newton, guitar; Martin Hansen, bass; Mallory Moad, vocals) got their start together in a western swing band called They Can’t Hardly Playboys. Things changed when members started having kids, working, going back to school. Those left standing wanted to keep playing but knew they couldn’t pull off the western swing sound. As a result, jazz became their genre of choice.
Each band member brings his or her own unique musical background to the table every time they play. Newton’s specialty is western swing, Hansen’s realm is hard rock ‘n roll and Moad’s is musical theater and performance art.
While the band’s repertoire relies heavily on the greatest hits of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, it also includes their own swing arrangements of more contemporary tunes such as “Cruella de Vil” and Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.
Scats on The Sly has played a wide variety of venues, from private functions like weddings and parties to public affairs such as the Rogue Performance Festival, the Reel Pride Film Festival, JazzFresno’s Jazz @ the Library, Fresno Filmworks, Hanford Chinatown Revitalization and the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra. The band has made appearances at local establishments including Peeve’s Public House, Full Circle Brewery and Gazebo Gardens.
